How Can I Catch Up in IGCSE Without Cramming Every Night?

When several topics feel unfinished, doing everything at once can make it difficult to see progress. Start by finding the gaps that stop you understanding the next piece of work.

Make an honest starting list

Use the correct syllabus or your teacher’s topic checklist. For each area, record whether you can explain the main idea and attempt a representative question. Avoid estimating readiness only from how familiar the notes look.

Mark areas where you need an explanation separately from those where you mainly need practice. If you are unsure, bring a short selection of questions to a teacher or tutor. A diagnosis based on actual work is more useful than a promise to cover the entire course quickly.

Prioritise foundations and deadlines

Some gaps affect several later topics. For instance, weak equation rearranging can make different Physics calculations harder. Repairing the prerequisite may therefore be more useful than repeatedly practising unrelated questions that rely on it.

Combine that information with confirmed assessment dates. Ask which objectives can realistically be addressed first and which need a longer sequence. Do not assume that a topic is unimportant just because it did not appear in one past paper, or rely on predictions of the next exam.

Create a repeatable study cycle

For one chosen gap, review a clear explanation, work through an example, attempt a similar task independently and check the result. Write down what remains unclear before moving on. This gives the next session a specific purpose.

Keep completed corrections where you can revisit them. A catch-up plan should not become an endless collection of new notes. Use later independent attempts to check whether a skill remains available when the explanation is no longer in front of you.

Plan around family life

Protect a few realistic study slots and discuss them with your family. During Ramadan or another period when routines change, agree different lesson and practice times in advance. There is no single ideal schedule for everyone; use the hours when you can work productively.

If a session is missed, choose the next priority rather than automatically doubling the following evening. Leave space for school assignments and commitments you intend to keep. A plan that depends on giving up every break or family activity may not last.

Use tuition for the obstacle you cannot resolve

Send the tutor your current course details, the topic list and one example of where you become stuck. Ask for an explanation of the first priorities and the independent work expected between lessons. Tuition should fit the plan rather than become a substitute for every piece of study.

Be cautious about guaranteed grades or finishing a large syllabus in an unusually short time. Review progress using specific work: can you begin the question, explain the method and complete it with fewer prompts? If a deadline is very close, ask your teacher for realistic advice about preparation and the options relevant to your course.
