How to Choose an Online IGCSE Tutor: A Parent’s Checklist

A useful tutor should be able to explain what your child needs help with and how lessons will address it. Start with that conversation before comparing packages or promises.

Define the problem before looking for a tutor

Write down the subject, qualification, exam board and the difficulty you are seeing. “Needs help with Maths” is a starting point; “can follow algebra examples but cannot begin unfamiliar questions” gives a tutor something concrete to investigate.

Bring a recent piece of marked work if possible. A low test score alone does not show whether the problem is missing knowledge, misunderstanding the task, accuracy or time management. Ask your child what happens when they get stuck, rather than deciding the cause for them.

Check experience with the actual course

Ask which specifications the tutor currently teaches and how they choose materials. A tutor can understand a subject well but still need to check the demands of your student’s qualification. Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel course names should not be treated as interchangeable labels.

For English, clarify whether the student needs language or literature support. For practical subjects, ask about the relevant software or assessed skills. You do not need to know every detail yourself: a good first conversation should help establish what information is missing.

Use the trial to observe learning

Choose one genuine difficulty for the trial. Notice whether the tutor asks the student to explain their thinking, adjusts the explanation and gives them a chance to try independently. Watching a polished worked solution can feel reassuring without showing what the learner can actually do.

Afterwards, ask your child to describe the method in their own words. Then ask the tutor what the first few lessons would focus on. Look for a specific, manageable plan rather than a guarantee of an A* or a promise to finish the course unusually quickly.

Agree the practical details

Confirm the rate, session length, payment arrangements, cancellation rules and how timetable changes are handled. Ask whether the same tutor will teach regularly and whether any materials or follow-up feedback cost extra. For Saudi families, state lesson times explicitly in Saudi Arabia time.

Discuss how parents receive updates and what independent practice is expected. An update can be brief: the skill covered, what the student managed alone and the next step. You should understand the purpose of continuing tuition, not just the date of the next payment.

Review the fit after a short agreed period

Keep a starting example of the student’s work and compare it with a later independent attempt. Look for a clearer method, fewer prompts or more accurate explanations, alongside school feedback. One improved answer is encouraging; consistent performance across different questions is stronger evidence.

If progress is unclear, ask what the tutor has learned from the sessions and what will change. It may be the plan, frequency, materials or tutor match. Paying for more hours should not be the automatic answer to every difficulty.
